We Won't Forget

Dinosaurs make everything better....

Blind man sees after having a tooth implanted into his eye.

During the procedure, a minute section of a patient's tooth is removed, reshaped and chiselled through to grip the man-made lens which is then placed in its core.

It is implanted under an eyelid where it becomes covered in tissue.

The process requires a living tooth as an implant because doctors suggest there are chances the eye would reject a plastic equivalent.

So a canine - which is the best option due to its shape and size - was taken out of Mr Jones' mouth.

A patch of skin is then taken from the inside of the cheek and placed in the eye for two months, where it gradually acquires its own blood supply.

The tooth segment is finally transplanted into the eye socket. The flap of grafted skin is then partially lifted from the eye and placed over its new sturdy base.

Finally, surgeons cut a hole in the grafted cornea to let light through.

You* are on notice.

I cannot wait to go back to my home where I will rejoin the ranks of the gens invisibles.

PS. Sorry, [info]commonreader . I broke down and capped off my Two-Minute Hate today by reading Roissy. I need to have high tea with strawberry jam in a park full of flowers where wee kittens frolic in teacups to make up for my hate.

*Should not apply to gentlemen of long-standing acquaintance, so don't start firing up your complaining engines yet.

the train to san diego

  • Jul. 18th, 2009 at 1:49 PM
Hoo ha! I am an insane person who decided to take the train to the San Diego Comicon this year. (booth 1335 / 1337 by small press, as usual) Amtrak is pretty weird and very charming.

I'm about 1/3 the way across the country right now, sitting in a lounge in Chicago. I set up a Tumblr account to easily document the trip without spamming every other service I'm on.

You should check it out at joebidenfanclub.com

(named after the only man who commuted to the Senate every day for decades via Amtrak)

I'm writing this post, or rather, it might be more accurate to say that I'm composing this post, using a nifty little piece of software I picked up last week for use in doing transcriptions of audio files for my research. Of course it also has the side benefit of allowing me to play around and use voice commands to browse the Internet, to chat with friends via IM, or of course to write silly LJ posts. The software is called NaturallySpeaking, and compared to the last time I used voice recognition software, about five years ago, is a major step forward. I haven't really spent any substantial time training the software but I estimate that I have around a 98% accuracy rate already. Ironically, however, the only word it's got wrong so far in this post is the number 98, which initially represented as 90. This leads me to conclude that the software has an inferiority complex, or low self-esteem, or just that he doesn't believe me. I guess we'll have to see how useful it is in the long term; my typing rate is quite high -- around seventy words per minute -- and it seems quite possible that even though speaking is faster than typing, the fact that there will be some errors, coupled with the fact that I have to pronounce punctuation or type it in manually, will make it more of a pain than it's worth. Several people in my department swear by it, however, so I'm willing to give it a shot. At the very least, it's a neat little toy to play around with on a lazy weekend.

PS: bonus points for identifying the reference in the title of the post.

Hello,
I am turning to you with a question.

I am a young women raised in western society. I have grown up in a christian family but have never practised any religon - I am not a muslima and I don't see myself becoming one as I cannot find believe in the trascendent in my heart.

But I have a few freinds who are muslims and so I have some connection to islam. I have long since been facinated with hijabs and the way muslimas dress. I would like to wear a hijab as well because I like what they represent and that they put more importance on what is inside me than on what I look like.
This is what I am asking you: Do you think I can wear a hijab without being a muslima?

Please let me know what you think.
Thank you

Quae?

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 6:04 PM
While Arthur's hatred of the French language is a matter of some renown, apparently he has found a new love of Latin. You see, we are terrible parents, and so we let him watch Futurama sometimes (at least, episodes without any serious adult content). One of his favourite episodes is also one of mine: the classic The Farnsworth Parabox. And one of his favourite scenes is also one of mine: the part where Bender-A and Bender-B enter the mysterious Universe XVII, where Professor Farnsworth(-XVII) is working on the chalkboard of a weird future Rome, doing arithmetic in Roman numerals. Hence, my love of the scene (Julia has long promised to make me an icon, as yet not made...). The two Benders talk for a while, and then go into another universe through a box. Professor Farnsworth, oblivious, looks up from his work and says, "Quae?" [What?] So now, Arthur is wandering around saying, "Quae?", very pleased with himself.

I will note however that while my preferred pronunciation of quae would be /kwai/, Professor Farnsworth (and Professor Arthur Farnsworth also) says /kwei/. But as Julia noted to me, we can chalk that up to linguistic changes in Latin from the classical period to the year 3000.

ONE MILLION DOLLARS worth of Typewriters.

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 2:24 PM

Sweet.

Just last year, New York City signed a $982,269 contract with Swintec for the purchase of thousands of new manual and electric typewriters over the next three years -- some of which retail for as much as $649 apiece. And last month, the city signed a $99,570 deal with Afax Business Machines for the maintenance of its existing typewriters.

The department is working on software to eliminate the old machines, a rep said.

Everyone claims to be at the Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell:

And yet, this venue has no mayor! THE BLOGOSPHERE IS FACT-CHECKING YOUR ASS, Das Racist! As you might expect, Foursquare shows some delightful results if you check the venue "On A Boat".

Finally, if you're really interested in knowing where in the world your musical favorites are geographically, check out the Word Magazine map of album covers.

The Quotable Bill Gates

  • Jul. 15th, 2009 at 2:40 PM

The two best quotes from Ina Fried's interview with Bill Gates today:

  • On advanced science: "That's right. We're going to make the cows that don't fart. You name it, we've got it under control."
  • On Google and his deep understanding of FUD: "[T]he more vague they are, the more interesting it is."

Once you're done reading that, enjoy a wonderful thing Gates has done: Posting full-length, annotated videos of Richard Feynman's best lectures.

Recent scientific findings in neuroscience, psychology, and machine learning are converging to create a new science of learning as computational, social, and supported by brain circuits linking perception and action that connect people to one another. Provoking Our Inner Stem Cells

  • Jul. 17th, 2009 at 8:25 AM
Fate Therapeutics aims to harness the body's ability to heal itself by developing drugs that stimulate resident stem cells.

The company began its first clinical trial in May of a novel molecule that could make cord-blood transplants more effective by enhancing the activity of the stem cells that create the blood and the immune system. (Source: http://www.technologyreview.com/business/23017/)
A genetic mutation linked to psychosis and schizophrenia also influences creativity, a Semmelweis University researcher has found.

He speculates that the mutation dampens a brain region that reins in mood and behavior, the prefrontal cortex. This change could unleash creative potential in some people and psychotic delusions in others. (Source: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17474-artistic-tendencies-linked-to-schizophrenia-gene.html)
Research by a group of Montreal scientists calls into question one of the most basic assumptions of human genetics: that when it comes to DNA, every cell in the body is essentially identical to every other cell.

Except for cancer, samples of diseased tissue are difficult or even impossible to take from living patients. Thus, the vast majority of genetic samples used in large-scale studies come in the form of blood. However, if it turns out that blood and tissue cells do not match genetically, these ambitious and expensive genome-wide association studies may prove to have been essentially flawed from the outset.
